If you’re gonna go out, go out on top

Following the example of my good friend and former Pflugerville Pflag sports editor, Chris Grant, who left Cox after taking well-deserved employee of the month honors earlier this June, it looks like old Jon is leaving the Austin American-Statesman community news group on top.

Over the weekend I earned bragging rights for producing the top sports pages in Division Five last year from the Texas Press Association, and took third in column writing for a piece on Lance Armstrong and the Penn State tragedy.

In the interest of full disclosure I’ve included the judges’ comments below:

1. Round Rock Leader: Ben Johnson page design looks great! Good writing, decent photography.

3. Round Rock Leader: “Time for Armstrong” by Jon Garrett – Difficult for sports column to place in this category, but quality writing that is not self-absorbed. Would prefer local subject matter. “All Penn State” by Jon Garrett – Nice approach.

Big things have small beginnings

Whether you first heard the title of this post as a flippant line thrown out in the middle of a beautiful, if overambitious, movie epic, in the classic “Lawrence of Arabia,” or at your grandfather’s knee –...
