MLB pitchers, NFL All-Pro to heat up Express homestand

Rojo won’t be back on the hill for the Express anytime soon, but this weekend’s series should provide plenty of highlights for Central Texas baseball fans.

One of my favorite sports beats is getting a lot hotter this week.

Thursday through Sunday the Round Rock Express host the Memphis Redbirds at Round Rock’s Dell Diamond in the first of two July homestands.

While the series will be a battle of Pacific Coast League bottom-dwellers, both teams are in last place in their respective divisions, it should provide plenty of highlights for those willing to brave the heat.

A trio of pitchers from Round Rock’s parent club the Texas Rangers will be starting their rehab assignments, former University of Texas star and current Washington Redskin’s linebacker Brian Orakpo will be on-hand Thursday for a meet-and-greet and the team will unveil new public address announcer Derrick Grubbs.

Neftali Feliz, Alexi Ogando and Koji Uehara are the Rangers pitchers making the trip down to Triple-A. Ogando (1-0, 2.08 ERA) will head to the mound first for the Express Thursday for an inning and is also scheduled to pitch one Saturday. Uehara, who has a 2.11 ERA in two relief appearances with the Rangers, will also head to the hill for the Express Saturday for an inning. Feliz, 3-1 (3.16 ERA) in seven starts with the Rangers, is on the bump Sunday, and should throw at least three frames.

The four-game series kicks off Thursday. All games will start at 7:05 p.m., except Saturday which will begin at 6:05 p.m. Those interested in meeting Orakpo, who will throw out the ceremonial first pitch for Thursday’s game, will be able to do so at the United Heritage Conference Center from 7 pm. through the second inning. A separate meet-and-greet will be held in the Intel Club for suite holders and members during the fourth through seven innings. Both events are sponsored by the Austin Diamond District.
